Multiplex social ecological network analysis reveals how social changes affect community robustness more than resource depletion.

چکیده
Network analysis provides a powerful tool to analyze complex influences of social and ecological structures on community and household dynamics. Most network studies of social-ecological systems use simple, undirected, unweighted networks. We analyze multiplex, directed, and weighted networks of subsistence food flows collected in three small indigenous communities in Arctic Alaska potentially facing substantial economic and ecological changes. Our analysis of plausible future scenarios suggests that changes to social relations and key households have greater effects on community robustness than changes to specific wild food resources.

Researchers studying on adaptation and resilience of systems mainly seek to reduce the vulnerability of extremely complex social-ecological systems against potential changes. Since major portion of natural resources of Iran is interrelated with various users and social groups. Present study focused upon the necessity of studying structural characteristics of social capital of rangeland users in...
متن کاملTitle : Institutions and adaptation processes : A social - ecological system approach for the study of adaptation to climate change
As the international community continues to engage in protracted negotiations over how to implement reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, the likelihood that society will face disturbances from extreme events and prolonged warming has increased. There is therefore a need to better understand the process by which adaptation occurs and in particular how the social, ecological and institutional ...
متن کاملUsing a Bayesian Belief Network to Integrate Ecology, Economics and Social Sciences to Improve Policy Making: a Literature Review
Humans live in close relationship to the environment, which they directly and indirectly use and depend on for food resources, building materials, protection, relaxation, to mention but a few examples. Recent years have seen depletion of the health of many natural environments leading to a stronger focus on natural resource based management approaches. While in earlier decades management was dr...
متن کاملHow Structured Is the Entangled Bank? The Surprisingly Simple Organization of Multiplex Ecological Networks Leads to Increased Persistence and Resilience
Species are linked to each other by a myriad of positive and negative interactions. This complex spectrum of interactions constitutes a network of links that mediates ecological communities' response to perturbations, such as exploitation and climate change. In the last decades, there have been great advances in the study of intricate ecological networks. We have, nonetheless, lacked both the d...
متن کاملManaging social–ecological systems under uncertainty: implementation in the real world
Management decisions for natural resources are not made in a vacuum; the environmental and ecological conditions as well as the socioeconomic and political contexts affect goals, the choice of interventions, their feasibility, and which outcomes are obtained. Although uncertainty is recognized as a feature of natural resource management, little attention has been given to the uncertainty genera...
